What is Astrology?
Stars appear to move across the sky on a regular schedule, much like the sun. At various times of the year, different constellations (groups of stars) become visible at sunset. The rising constellations rotate based on the Earth's path through space, so consequently can be used to mark the seasons in regions when moderate weather may not convey any change.
Most of the constellations of which we are aware today bear Greek and Roman names, but the sky was mapped long before these empires were established. The Greeks adopted their system from the Babylonians, whose origins in turn may have stemmed from Sumerian traditions 3,000 years earlier. Even further back, scientists suspect that markings on the cave walls at Lascaux in southern France -- created over 17,000 years ago -- may chart the Pleiades and Hyades star clusters, making it the first known star map.
In 1929, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially defined 88 constellations across the span of the sky. The official constellations are in fact ‘rectangular slices’ of the heavens holding the stars within them. Individual groupings are included, for instance, the constellation of Ursa Major contains all of the stars around the shape known by the same name. However, many of the groupings most people consider to be constellations are not officially recognised as such, e.g. the ‘Big Dipper’, which lies inside Ursa Major, is an asterism, i.e. a group of stars not officially designated but known by most non-astronomers.
The word 'horoscope' comes from the Greek meaning 'scope of the hour'. A horoscope is a 'map' of the mathematical relationships of the Sun, moon and planets to the earth, and to each other, at the date and time of our birth. It simply reflects our own individuality and identity -- it does not cause it -- and determines to foretell what will happen in the future, i.e. whether conditions will be favourable to conduct a business activity, move house (including emigrating), get married, start a family etc. The word horoscope is derived from the Greek words ora and scopos meaning 'time' and 'observer'. Horoscopes now appear in almost every national and local newspaper, as well as on the internet, and are consulted by millions of people throughout the world on a daily basis.

What are Constellations?
We know the constellations are helpful for remembering the stars, but why would people want to do that (apart from astronomers, that is)? We said at the beginning that farmers invented the constellations, but why did they do that? Was it for some religious purpose? Possibly. Around the world, farmers know that for most crops, you plant in the spring and harvest in the fall. But in some regions, there is not much differentiation between the seasons. Since different constellations are visible at different times of the year, you can use them to tell what month it is. For example, Scorpio is only visible in the northern hemisphere's evening sky in the summer. Some historians suspect that many of the myths associated with the constellations were invented to help the farmers remember them. When they saw certain constellations, they would know it was time to begin the planting or the reaping. This dependence on the night sky became a strong part of many cultures. Perhaps there is something about the mystery of the sky at night that makes people want to tell stories about the constellations. The image to the right shows the great hunter, Orion. The constellations have changed over time. In our modern world, many of the constellations have been redefined, so now every star in the sky is belongs to one certain constellation. In 1929, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) adopted official constellation boundaries that defined the 88 official constellations that exist today.
The Constellations found in the Zodiac
Nevertheless, the constellations can provide entertainment and a source of imagination. They can help the lost to find their way. They aid sky watchers in their search for planets, comets, or other events, by a process called star hopping. And, as they surely did with the ancients, they can provoke a sense of timeless wonder. Astrological Birth Signs / Star Signs
Each of the twelve horoscope signs belongs to one of the four elements (Air, Fire, Water and Earth), which represent an essential type of energy that acts in each of us. Astrology aims to help us focus these energies on our positive aspects and to gain a better understanding of our potential and positive traits, and deal with the negative ones. The four zodiac elements exhibit profound influence on basic character traits, emotions, behavior and thinking, and help to describe the unique personality types associated with the astrological signs.
Water SignsIntuitive, emotional and ultra-sensitive, water signs can be as mysterious as the ocean itself. Like water, they can be refreshing, or they can drown you in their depths. These signs often have intense dreams and borderline-psychic intuition. Security is important to them -— after all, water needs a container, or it will dry up and disappear. Water signs are exceptionally emotional and ultra-sensitive. Water signs love meaningful conversations and intimacy. They rarely do anything openly and are always there to support their loved ones. The Water Signs are: Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
Fire SignsFire can keep you warm, or it can do great destruction. While fire burns out quickly without fuel to keep it going, it can also regenerate its power from the ashes, for example, a single spark can set off a forest fire. As a result, fire signs need to be nurtured and managed carefully. Fire signs tend to be passionate, dynamic, and temperamental and get angry quickly, but they also forgive easily. They are adventurers with immense energy. They are physically very strong and are a source of inspiration for others. They are intelligent, self-aware, creative and idealistic people, always ready for action. The Fire Signs are: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.
Earth SignsEarth signs keep it real. They are the 'grounded' people on the planet, the ones who bring us down to earth and remind us to start with a solid foundation. Slow and steady, these 'builders' are loyal and stable; they are practical, loyal and stable and stick by their people through hard times. . They are mostly conservative and realistic, but they can also be very emotional. They are connected to our material reality and can be turned to material goods.Slow and steady, these 'builders' are loyal and stable; they are practical, loyal and stable and stick by their people through hard times. The Earth Signs are: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.
Air SignsAir signs are all about action, ideas, and motion -- they are the 'winds of change'. When a strong gust hits you, you can’t help but move. While some within may be true-life 'airheads', others are as powerful as a gravity-defying G-force. Air signs bring everyone a breath of fresh air when things start to get stale. Like the breeze, you can’t quite catch them, and you never know where they’ll drop you once they sweep you up. It will almost always have been an adventure, though. Air signs are rational, social, and love communication and relationships with other people. They are thinkers, friendly, intellectual, communicative and analytical, and love philosophical discussions, social gatherings and good books. They enjoy giving advice, but they can also be very superficial. The Air Signs are: Gemini, Libra and Aquarius.

Aries
In personal relationships Arians are usually frank and very direct, and tend to be generous friends. Arians are reputed to have a high sex drive and thus make passionate lovers. However, this sex drive can have a negative side and drive them to promiscuity, and even 'trick' them into a marriage which could possibly end with disastrous results. But if the marriage is successful with offspring, Arians make devoted parents, defending their children with their own lives if necessary.
Dislikes
Aries is said to govern the head and thus the brain. Consequently, Arians are prone to migraines or headaches in general, sunstroke, and depression. Because of their tremendous physical commitment, they are liable to physical injury, possibly through accidents. Indigestion and nervous disorders should also be of some concern.
Arians, with their boundless energy, make good athletes, climbers and explorers, probably in outer space in this modern age. Because of their leadership qualities they would make excellent servicemen, i.e. soldiers, sailors, airmen etc.
In relationships they make true and generous friends, but rarely with those outside their own social status. They are amorous, but not excessively so, and tend to be sexually straightforward, not given to experimentation in the bedroom. They are faithful, home loving spouses and make thoughtful, kind parents. Should anyone offend them they readily become a true enemy, although they soon forgive if their offender makes an apology and meets them halfway.
Dislikes
Taurus is said to govern the neck and throat. Consequently Taureans need to beware of throat infections, goitre and debilitating respiratory conditions such as asthma. They are also at risk of rheumatism, as well as diseases of the genitals, womb, liver and kidneys. Since their bodies are reputed to be prone to physical laziness, Taureans are also prone to weight problems.
Taureans can succeed in almost any profession they choose. They are not afraid of getting their 'hands dirty', being industrious and good craftsmen. They obey superiors, and as such are reliable, as well as methodical and practical workers. They prefer positions of responsibility, but in a routine where there are no deadlines to meet. Banking, insurance, education, medicine, chemistry, industry, architecture, farming and surveying are professions in which Taureans could make good managers.
They can be entertaining companions, witty acquaintances rather than true friends, but never dull. With their love of talking they are great conversationalists, but they can also be quarrelsome, boasters, cheats and liars. Because of the dual aspect of their emotional nature, Geminians are fickle in relationships. They can be very emotional but at the same time
dislike any sign of sentimentality. Because Geminians take nothing seriously, in love they are flirtatious, any emotion they show being for the 'moment' while the relationship is new. They enjoy the thrill of the chase, but tend lo lose interest once the prey has been caught.
Dislikes
Gemini is purported to rule the upper body, including the hands, arms and shoulders, as well as the lungs and nervous system. Because of this, Geminians should be aware of diseases which affect the upper part of the body, for example, bronchitis. As they are also known risk-takers, they could be prone to taking unnecessary chances resulting in accidental self-harm, or injury to others.
Their general characteristics suggest that Geminians can succeed in many walks of life. Their love of talking and reading makes them skilful at speaking and writing, so they could become debaters, diplomats, preachers, teachers, lawyers, authors, poets or journalists. Any type of work where they can use their quick wit in different surroundings would be ideal. This encompasses serving in the armed forces, dealing with the public or as a sales representative. Being logical, rational and analytical they would also make good scientists or possibly IT
specialists. Conversely, their 'other side' suggests they could become confidence tricksters or thieves, at which they would probably excel.
Cancerians make very loyal friends and are doggedly patriotic. In personal relationships they are a mixture of toughness and softness, often emotional and romantic, but, nevertheless, remaining extremely loyal to their partners and family. They are greatly influenced by the ones they love, giving much and asking for little in return.
Dislikes
Cancer governs the chest, breasts, elbows, stomach and digestion, womb and female reproductive organs. Cancerians are said to be prone to breast cancer (though this is certainly not a proven fact) and to suffer from varicose veins, pleurisy and piles. They may also have a weak digestive system, and suffer from gastritis, ulcers and other such stomach ailments. There is also a tendency for coughs and weak vision.
Their own love of comfort and home life suits the Cancerian for a career as an excellent chef or housekeeper. They can serve in departments of public affairs, from catering to welfare and nursing. Because they enjoy reading and writing, they can also make good journalists or writers. More common occupations are estate agent or gardener.
In relationships Leonians are sincere, trusting, warm hearted and plain spoken, but dislike being let down by those they trust. They have a particularly strong sex drive, so much so that they find it difficult to be true when attracted to the opposite sex. They may have many love affairs, moving swiftly from one attractive partner to another, as a result of which they may not be very successful at marriage.
Dislikes
Leo is said to govern the forearms, including the wrists and hands, the upper back, spine and heart, so pains in the back, spinal complaints in general, heart disease and blood disorders can be expected, besides rheumatism or arthritis in the hands and wrists.
Leonians need to lead - they were born for it. They are excellent organisers, and love to start new projects, laying the groundwork for subordinates to follow. If they come from a 'working class' background, they will aspire to becoming the foreman, and subsequently the boss or manager. In business they may well become the chairman of a successful company; in politics they will not rest until they aspire to a top position in government.
They have very few stable relationships, and thus make few friends. In marriage they look for a partner with a low sex-drive, as they are not renowned for being over-passionate. This does not mean that they do not make good husbands and wives, it is simply the fact that the physical act of love-making is more of a duty than a desire.
Dislikes
Virgo is said to govern the hands, central nervous system, abdomen, spleen and intestines. Illnesses include chest complaints, including catarrh, coughs and colds and pneumonia (rarer these days). Because they tend to worry, sometimes unnecessarily, turning molehills into mountains, this makes them exceptionally vulnerable to stomach problems such as ulcers, and may even lead to hypochondria. Male Virgoans could have trouble with their sexual organs.
Due to their lack of self-confidence, Virgoans make better subordinates than leaders, although they make excellent technicians with their inventive talents. They like using language - correctly, so might suit a job in a library. Alternatively, they might become writers, particularly of historical reference books as opposed to novels. Their practical, analytical minds might mean they become computer programmers, accountants or book-keepers, or even chemists or physicists.
In their personal relationships they will endeavour to resolve any differences by compromise rather than spoil a friendship. They like the opposite sex, sometimes to the extent of promiscuity. Their marriages stand a good chance of success because the kindness shown toward their partner, even tolerating their failings, quickly repairs any hurt felt by him or her if they have had an argument. Negatively, Librans can be flirtatious and shallow, indecisive, and boring. Love for the good things in life can lead them to squander money or to become gamblers.
Dislikes
Libra is said to govern the lower back, kidneys and lumbar region generally. Consequently, Librans should be aware of possible weakness in the back, and definitely avoid over-indulgence in alcohol as this can damage the kidneys. Librans are also prone to suffer from gravel and stones in the kidneys and bladder.
Librans have an aversion to any dirty type of work, such as refuse collection and gardening. Their characteristics intimate that they would make excellent diplomats (being well-balanced and seeing other people's points of view), civil servants, administrators or lawyers. Similarly, being trustworthy types, they could follow a successful career in banking or finance.
Scorpios make very good friends, providing their companions do not try to hold them responsible for some action or other. On the negative side, they are very jealous, and part of their negativity is a tendency to discard friends once they cease to be of any use to them. Scorpio, being the symbol of sex, means Scorpios are passionate lovers. They tend to use sex to 'transcend', to cross the boundary of this physical earth into the spiritual. As a result of this, debauchery is always a possibility.
Dislikes
Scorpio is said to govern the reproductive and urinary systems, as well as the pelvic area. Consequently, Scorpios are likely to be prone to genital ailments, as well as those of the liver and kidneys, such as stones and gravel, and ulcers and ruptures. As a consequence of possible problems with the kidneys and liver they may suffer from boils, abscesses and piles.
Scorpios can achieve success in many employments, naturally relating as leaders to fellow workers due to their demands and unforgiving nature. Any profession in which analysis, research, investigation and the solving of mysteries is particularly relevant, so police or detective work, espionage, the law, or physics may be appropriate. Self-control and detachment indicate that they may become good surgeons.
In personal relationships they are usually reliable and trustworthy. They can also be outspoken and quickly lose patience, saying exactly what's on their mind, which may well hurt others. In love relationships, they are 'straightforward' and conventional. If they have a successful marriage, they will be faithful to their partners, but there is always that restlessness to wander 'nagging' at them. If the urge to wander becomes excessive, they may waste their lives away on one frivolous pursuit after another.
Dislikes
Sagittarius governs the hips and thighs, so there may be a tendency to suffer from ailments in these areas. They are also prone to sciatica and rheumatism. Research shows that ancient astrologers mentioned falling from horses and injuries which can be sustained from them and other four-legged animals.
A Sagittarian's characteristics fit him or her for many professions. The law or politics would suit them, as would any position in public service. Their love of travel makes them ideal travelling salesmen members of the armed forces, or even explorers. Alternatively their intellect indicates they may become teachers.
In personal relationships they often feel ill at ease, being self-centred, and wary about unknown quantities in another person. They tend to treat casual acquaintances with respect, but when they do eventually make friends they are loyal. They dislike or distrust the opposite sex, and when entering a relationship of this kind they ensure conditions and circumstances meet their requirements before considering marriage. If and when they do marry, it is normally for life.
Dislikes
Capricorn governs the bones, skin and the knees, thus those born under this sign may be prone to fractures, sprains or other problems with the lower limbs. Deafness, rheumatism and rickets are also possibilities, as are skin diseases such as rashes and boils. Digestive upsets may be caused by a tendency to worry.
Men or women born under this sign are dependable workers with their 'see it through to the end' attitude, planning carefully to fulfil their own ambitions, and with their organisational skills can work on several projects at the same time. They respect authority, but if they come into such a position, they expect their subordinates to meet their own high standards. Suitable occupations include those associated with money and calculations such as banking, financiers, economists etc. Anything involving long term planning is also ideal, and because of their love of debate, a career as a politician might suit them.
Despite their open, friendly personalities, Aquarians find it difficult to establish friendships, as a result of which others see them as being 'cold' and stand-offish. However, once the ice is completely broken, they do make excellent friends. The same applies to relationships with the opposite sex, for having found a suitable partner they will be faithful and willing to sacrifice everything for him or her. Emotionally they are often disappointed because their own ideals cause them to expect more.
Dislikes
Aquarius is said to govern blood circulation, and the whole of the lower legs, so Aquarians are prone to problems in the knees and ankles, including cramps. They may also suffer from nervous complaints, and anything related to blood disorders.
Aquarians are at one with nature, so a career in natural history would suit them ideally. With their caring attitude a career in medicine or healing is also appropriate, possibly as a veterinary surgeon. With their thirst for knowledge, a career in the sciences could also figure strongly, as could one in the technological world.
They quite happily accept the people around them, and give far more than they get in return in any relationships. They are not noted for extremes in sexual relationships, preferring a spiritual relationship rather than a sexual one. Nevertheless, when married they are home loving and loyal partners, remaining ever faithful.
Dislikes
Pisces governs the lymph glands, liver and feet, so consequently Pisceans can suffer from anaemia, boils, ulcers and other skin diseases. They could also be prone to gout and lameness. The female of the species, can expect to have heavy periods.
Pisceans are 'followers' so work better in subordinate positions rather than any where they have to take responsibility. Consequently, charity work would suit them, as would a caring position for people or animals. Their dreams of travel may equip them for duties in the armed forces or the merchant navy. Their spiritual characteristics could well fit them for a position in the church or possibly in the psychic world as mediums.
The planets reflect the archetypal references (which exist as ideas) that are inherent in the 'Multiverse' (many layered universe) holographically. These archetypes were refined in delineation by the renowned psychologist, Carl Jung. These 'ideas' are supposedly reflected in all that we see around us because we are 'one with the universe' and, as such, are that reality.
